We wouldn't guess that the big and noisy Santa Catarina street owes its name to the little church on it.
The chapel of the souls of Santa Catarina, the martyr, was built in the 18th century and used to face an old rural path that passed through farms that connected the Marquês area to the old borough. Today this path transformed itself into the typical commercial street of Porto.
The baroque chapel is covered in tiles with representations of the life of Santa Catarina of Alexandria and São Francisco of Assisi, which were recovered in 1982, and it is always worth the visit to see one of the most beautiful examples of tiles on the city.
