Who arrives today at the river bank down the street of São João and faces with Ribeira Square, or Praça do Cubo, well known for the work of the sculptor José Rodrigues, with its number of chairs, esplanades and customers waiting standing by employees running in tight queues, can not imagine the life of that space on other days.
The square was effectively the open space before the medieval wall where the goods were landing before they went to market. It is very usual to see photographs of several pairs of oxen resting after having brought the barrels of the Port to the shore.
Today it is an open space with a great human bustle, no longer linked to riverside goods but to tourism, where there are good bars, street animation and where the "Rabelos" dock waiting for new crew from all over the world.
