In the middle of the 18th century the founder of the religious order of Nossa Senhora da Lapa lands in Portugal coming from Brazil, the priest Ângelo Sequeira. The first chapel of this order was built before the vatican's approval for the brethren's constitution.
After the creation of the religious order, already with papal acceptance, the current church was built in Baroque and Neoclassical styles. The Order's cemetery was also created, it is the oldest of the romantic era in Portugal, which is always worth the visit.
In it can be found names such as the important portuguese writer Camilo Castelo Branco, the arquitects José Marques da Silva and Marques de Oliveira and the mausuleum created by Dª. Maria the II in the name of her father, the liberal warrior king D. Pedro the IV, to hold his heart that he gave to the town, still there today.
In 1995, the Church acquired the monumental Tube Organ, which is currently used for church-sponsored concerts. This organ is about 32 tons, 15 meters high and 10.5 meters wide.
